This is an illustrated and personified take on one of the major results in my dissertation.
My longest chapter consists of computer models of hypothetical earthquakes on the San Jacinto Fault, incorporating all sorts of complex parameters like details of fault geometry and the effect of surrounding geology. The San Jacinto Fault runs through the Inland Empire, so any earthquake on it is going to mess with a lot of people. As it turns out, though, San Bernardino gets messed with the worst out of any city within my model space, since the fault goes right through it, that part of the fault is particularly favorable for rupture, and there’s a ton of soft squishy sediment (which shakes particularly hard) right there. Riverside, on the other hand, never gets slammed terribly hard, though it still wouldn’t be having the greatest day ever if that earthquake did happen.
Considering that I’ve had personified fault characters for ages, and personified Inland Empire city characters for a few months, and considering that I used up all my real brainpower on the dissertation itself, I decided to do a little illustration.
